Search engine
Whatever you search for from the address bar goes to the default search engine: in Russia and Belarus that is Yandex. Below is how Sverk picks it, how to change it, how to search a particular site directly, and what the search engine receives while you type.
The default search engine
In Russia and Belarus the default is Yandex; everywhere else it is Google, as in Chromium. Sverk takes the country from the region set in Windows settings when the profile first starts, and does not change it afterwards.
Yandex is on the list of search engines in every country — even when Windows is set to a region for which Chromium does not offer it.
On first run Sverk asks for itself, on the Where to search screen. The search engine you pick there becomes the default at once; Leave it as it is keeps the current one.
Changing the search engine
- Open Settings → Search engine.
- Click Change next to the name of the current search engine.
- Pick another one and click Set as default.
All search engines are on the Manage search engines and site search page (chrome://settings/searchEngines). You can change the default there too: the ⋮ menu next to a search engine → Make default.
To search with another engine just once, without changing the default, type its shortcut from that list in the address bar — for example duckduckgo.com — press Space or Tab, and type your query.
Site search
A shortcut searches a particular site directly. To add your own, open chrome://settings/searchEngines, click Add under Site search and fill in Name, Shortcut and URL with %s in place of query — the address of the site's results page with %s where the query goes.
The ready-made shortcuts @tabs, @bookmarks and @history search your open tabs, bookmarks and Sverk history, on the computer. @gemini opens Google's Gemini site and passes it your query.
Some sites where you searched with their own search box Sverk remembers by itself and puts under Inactive shortcuts. Such a shortcut does not work until you click Activate next to it.
What goes out while you type
While you type in the address bar, Sverk sends the text to the default search engine, which returns suggestions. When you press Enter, the query goes to it as well. Suggestions from your history and bookmarks Sverk finds itself, on the computer. In an Incognito window Sverk asks the search engine for no suggestions: the text leaves only when you press Enter.
To turn the search engine's suggestions off, click the profile icon to the right of the address bar, choose Service settings and turn off Improve search suggestions. The same page opens at chrome://settings/googleServices. The query you send with Enter still reaches the search engine.
What leaves the computer and for whom is in the privacy policy.
