Resetting settings
A reset returns Sverk's settings to their defaults — for example, when an extension or another program has changed them and putting everything back by hand is hard. Bookmarks, history and passwords stay. Sometimes Sverk restores some settings by itself: the last two sections are about that.
What changes and what stays
A reset restores:
- the search engine: Yandex again in Russia and Belarus, Google elsewhere; search engines and site search shortcuts you added are removed;
- start-up and the home page: Sverk again continues where you left off, and the home button is back and opens the new tab;
- pinned tabs — they are unpinned;
- permissions and exceptions in Site settings: camera, microphone, notifications, pop-ups and others;
- website languages and translation settings — the reset window does not mention them;
- Sverk's shortcuts on the desktop, in the Start menu and on the taskbar: extra launch parameters are removed from them. The reset window calls this “Reset Sverk shortcuts”.
The reset also deletes cookies, site data and the cache — you will have to sign in to sites again — and turns extensions off without removing them. Bookmarks, history, saved passwords, addresses and cards stay.
The Sverk Shield blocker is an extension too, so after a reset it is off. Turn it back on at chrome://extensions with the switch next to Sverk Shield. The Ad blocking page does not notice and still shows the mode chosen before the reset, so turn the blocker on at chrome://extensions.
How to reset
- Open Settings → Reset settings → Restore settings to their original defaults. The address
chrome://settings/resetProfileSettingsopens the reset window directly. - Decide whether to keep the check box at the bottom of the window — see below.
- Click Reset settings.
The Help make Sverk better by reporting the current settings check box is ticked in advance. With it, a report goes out after the reset on what the changed settings were: the addresses of the start-up pages and the home page, the search engine's address, the extensions that were on, the launch parameters of Sverk's shortcuts. Google receives it, not Sverk. The current settings link in the check box label shows what exactly would be sent. To send nothing, clear the check box.
The “Your settings were changed by an unknown app” window
Sverk keeps a copy of the search engine setting and compares the setting with it at every start. If the search engine was changed behind the browser's back — another program rewrote the profile's files — Sverk restores the default: Yandex in Russia and Belarus.
The next time you search from the address bar, the Your settings were changed by an unknown app window appears under Sverk's menu button: the search engine was changed from outside Sverk, and Sverk reset it to the default. Search settings opens the search engine settings, Got it closes the window. It shows once.
If you changed the search engine yourself, pick it again — see changing the search engine. If you did not, some program on the computer changed Sverk's settings.
The “Sverk reset these settings” window
Sverk keeps some settings with a check code: the home page and the home button, the start-up pages, pinned tabs, the search engine and extensions. If at start-up the code does not match — the setting was changed outside Sverk — the browser returns it to the default.
If what was reset includes the search engine, the home page, the home button, pinned tabs or extensions, then for the next five days opening settings brings up the Sverk reset these settings window: “These settings were changed from outside of Sverk. To protect you, Sverk reset them.” Below the text is what was reset: Default Search Engine (DSE), Show home button, Homepage, Pinned tabs or Extension(s). After Got it the window does not come back until Sverk resets something again.
Check those settings and set what you need again. If the window keeps coming back, some program on the computer keeps changing them.
