Translating pages
Sverk translates pages through Yandex Translate and changes the text right on the page, so the site's links and buttons keep working. Below: how to translate a page, how to set up “always translate”, and what leaves the computer.
How to translate a page
When a page is in another language, Sverk offers to translate it: a small window opens under the address bar with two tabs — the page's language and the target language, such as “Russian” and “English”. Click the tab with the target language. The tab with the page's language brings the original back.
You can translate a page without the offer too:
- right-click the page → Translate to English (or another language of yours);
- ⋮ → Translate...;
- the translate icon in the address bar, which opens the same window again.
The whole page is translated, the visible part first. A selected piece alone cannot be translated: the right-click item translates the whole page.
Sverk detects the page's language from its text, on this computer. If it got it wrong, click ⋮ (Translate options) in the window → Page not in … and pick the right one. For another target language: ⋮ → Choose another language; for good: Settings → Languages → Translate into this language.
Always or never
In the same ⋮ menu of the translate window:
- Always translate … — pages in this language translate by themselves, without asking. After the first translation from a language, this item also appears in the window as a checkbox;
- Never translate … — Sverk stops offering translation from this language;
- Never translate this site — the same for the site.
The language lists are in Settings → Languages, under Page translation: Automatically translate these languages and Never offer to translate these languages, each with an Add languages button.
An Incognito window has no Always translate, and pages there are not translated by themselves.
How to turn translation offers off
Turn off Settings → Languages → Offer to translate pages in other languages. Sverk then offers nothing and translates nothing by itself, not even the languages in Automatically translate these languages. You can still translate a page from the right-click menu or with ⋮ → Translate....
To stop offers for one language or site only, choose Never translate … or Never translate this site in the translate window.
What leaves the computer
When a page is translated — because you asked or turned on “always translate” for its language — Sverk sends its text in parts and the target language to Yandex Translate, along with the site's address without the path: for example https://example.com, not the page's own address.
Sverk also gets a technical key for translation from Yandex: when a page opens that it would offer to translate, at most once every 20 minutes. That request carries no addresses or content of your pages and no cookies; Yandex sees your IP address and the time.
With offers off and nothing translated, nothing goes to Yandex. Sverk's server takes no part in translation. More in the privacy policy.
If translation is not offered or fails
Sverk offers translation only once Yandex has answered. If Yandex cannot be reached — the network blocks it, it is down, or it answers with an “I'm not a robot” check — there is no offer, and Sverk shows none for the next ten minutes.
You can still translate from the menu. If that fails, the window says This page couldn't be translated and offers Try again: the next attempt starts with a fresh key.
Pages in the languages listed under Never offer to translate these languages, and sites you chose Never translate this site for, are never offered translation.
