Updating Sverk
Sverk for Windows updates itself, from Sverk's server, not through Google. Below is how updates arrive, when a new version starts working, how to check for updates by hand, and what to do when the check fails.
How updates arrive
Updates are checked for and installed by the Sverk updater. The installer from sverk.ai puts it on the computer together with the browser. It runs on its own, on a Windows schedule, even while Sverk is closed. About every five hours it asks Sverk's server whether there is a new version and, if there is, downloads and installs it by itself, without asking.
The updater installs only what is signed with Sverk's key: the package signature is checked before anything is unpacked or run.
Each check sends Sverk's server the Sverk version and build, the channel, the system and its architecture, the language, and the days of the previous check and of the previous use — no install identifier. These checks cannot be turned off. More in the privacy policy.
On a phone, Sverk updates from wherever you installed it.
When the new version starts working
A new version starts working when Sverk restarts. If the update arrived while Sverk was closed, the next start opens the new version.
If Sverk is open, it keeps running the old version while the new one waits on disk. Close all Sverk windows and open it again — the new version starts.
If Sverk is not restarted for two days, the ⋮ menu button shows Update, and the first menu item becomes Relaunch to update Sverk. That item closes Sverk and opens it again straight away, with the same tabs; Incognito windows do not reopen.
Checking by hand
Open Settings → About Sverk or the address chrome://settings/help. Sverk asks the server for a new version right away — the page says “Checking for updates”.
If there is a new version, Sverk installs it right there — “Updating Sverk” with a percentage — then says “Nearly up to date! Relaunch Sverk to finish updating.” and shows a Relaunch button. If the new version is already installed and waiting for a restart, that message and button appear at once. If Incognito windows are open, Sverk asks first: they will not reopen after the relaunch.
If there is nothing newer, the page says “Sverk is up to date”. It also shows the installed version, for example “Version 155.0.8059.117 (Official Build) (64-bit)”.
When the check fails
Then the About Sverk page says “An error occurred while checking for updates” and gives an error code, for example “1: 0X80004005”. The number before the colon tells what happened:

If the page says “Updates are disabled by your administrator.” instead of an error, a policy on this computer has turned updates off (more in “Your browser is managed”).
If the error does not go away, install Sverk over the top (below) or write to us at support@sverk.ai with the whole code. If it was the Sverk installation itself that did not finish, see “The installation did not finish”.
When Sverk says it could not update
When the Sverk build is more than eight weeks old, Sverk shows a “Can't update Sverk” window at startup: “Sverk couldn't update to the latest version, so you're missing out on new features and security fixes.” The first item of the ⋮ menu becomes Sverk is out of date, which opens the same window.
- Open About Sverk: if there is a new version, it installs there.
- If it says “Sverk is up to date”, Sverk's server has nothing newer, and there is no point in reinstalling.
- If the check fails and the advice above did not help, install Sverk over the top: on sverk.ai click Download for Windows and run the downloaded file. There is no need to uninstall Sverk first.
The installer installs the latest Sverk and the updater. Bookmarks, passwords, history and settings stay where they are: they live in the profile, apart from the program files, and the installer does not touch it. Only uninstalling Sverk erases the profile, and only if you choose that yourself.
